Panajachel - better known as 'Pana' - is the mecca of Lake Atitlan, it is the lively gateway to all the lakeside towns. This is the city we are staying in. Head to the downtown along the docks where you can catch water taxis to explore the rest of Lake Atitlan. Take the time wandering colorful streets and bustling docks, or stroll the famous Santander street for souvenirs. Or need a pick-me-up? Grab a perfectly crafted flat white from Cafe Loco. Getting around is part of the fun! Hop into a little red Tuk Tuk (yes, the adorable three wheeled taxis!) from Hotel Atitlan, they'll zip anywhere in town for about 10Q (around $2 USD).
Our favorite town along Lake Atitlán is San Juan La Laguna. This Mayan village is known for its art, textile and artisan shops. All around town you’ll find colorful murals, streets with painted walkways and items hanging above the street, like umbrellas. It is so fun to walk around and take in the views and listen to the vibrant musicians along the streets. Book a coffee tasting tour or simply walk around, grab a bite, and enjoy. Grab a water taxi from Pana for only 25Q (around $3-4 USD). They will provide a guide on the dock once you get off the boat, but you can simply decline and enjoy San Juan at your own pace.
La Casa del Mundo is said to be the most magical hotel on Lake Atitlán. Only accessible by boat from Pana, this hotel boasts beautiful architecture, an impressive cliffside location, a dreamy hot tub to soak in & immaculate landscaping. You can visit for just the day for Q50 (~$6.50 USD) per person. This will give you access to the incredible grounds where you can lay in hammocks, swim in the lake or soak in the firewood heated jacuzzi.
A short walk away from our hotel is the Lake Atitlan Natural Reserve. It is a lush escape where jungle meets the lake views. Hike the winding paths and encounter breathtaking views, cross the suspension bridge, or visit the butterfly sanctuary. If you're feeling brave, try the zip lines that soar over waterfalls and treetops.
Guatemala is one of the world’s top producers of coffee, so for the coffee lovers out there, going on a coffee tour is a must! There are many to choose from all around the lake.
