There is one reason they call the airport in Reno the Reno-Tahoe International Airport: It’s really close. Squaw Valley is a short 45-minute drive and, like most small-ish airports, it’s easy to rent a car and get on the road. For our friends coming from Washington, D.C., it is easy to find flights connecting through Salt Lake City or Minneapolis on Delta, Phoenix or Dallas on American and Denver or San Francisco on United. For those coming from New York, you are in luck: There is a regular direct flight from JFK to Reno on JetBlue. A secondary option to Reno is Sacramento. It’s not nearly as far as SFO, but still about an hour and a half from Squaw. Our suggestion: Flying into Reno is ideal and your best option, if doable.

The biggest airport close to Lake Tahoe is San Francisco, the ninth largest airport in the country. There are plenty of direct flights across the country, including from DCA and IAD on United. But your tradeoff is an (at least) 3.5 hour drive from the airport to Lake Tahoe (could be longer if you hit rush hour in the Bay Area or decide to make the drive up on Friday afternoon). Our suggestion: Fly to San Francisco if you want to make a longer trip out of your visit. Napa Valley, the entire Bay Area and the Pacific Coast Highway are all doable in combination with Tahoe. If you have an extra day on either end, this is a great option. We’d discourage you, however, to try to fly into San Francisco on Friday and drive up in the afternoon. It can get very busy.

The Village at Squaw Valley has a number of large, apartment style lodging options right at the base of the ski slopes in Squaw, including three bedroom/three bath suites. We do not have a room block here but encourage you to check availability if a ski village vibe sounds appealing.
House Or Rental
There are great Airbnb options around Lake Tahoe but they tend to book up fast in the summer months so better to get a jump on that now. Otherwise, there are some small inns and cottages near Homewood that are also great. Our suggestions: The Cottage Inn or Basecamp Tahoe City.
