How We Met

The Birdhouse

In March of 2020, I (Molly) was in the middle of interviewing for jobs in Denver, when the world took an unexpected turn due to COVID-19. Unsure of what was in store, as the US began discussing closing the state borders, I made the decision to go home to Evansville to be with my family until things settled down and the world had more of a concrete plan. One crisp morning, my sister-in-law, Ali, and I woke up early, and without even taking a peak in the mirror or changing out of our PJs, we took the dogs out for a short morning stroll on ECC's golf course. As we headed back towards Peter and Ali's condo, I spotted a handsome guy ahead of us, and thought "Oh no, I probably have crazy bed head right now - I hope he doesn't see me!" Well, too late for me, because before I knew it, he excitedly looked up at Ali and said "Hey Ali - What are you up to this morning?" I thought, "Oh! They know each other." Ali introduced me and explained that we were taking the dogs out, and Dylan explained that he was up so early because he was helping their elderly neighbor hang a bird feeder outside, and went on to tell us that he frequently helps out their elderly neighbors early in the morning before work. Turns out, Dylan was a neighbor of Peter and Ali's, and they had spent quite a bit of time together. As we walked away, I asked Ali a series of questions. "So, he's not in a relationship, not divorced, not out of a recent relationship - But how? He's clearly such a catch!" I also was shocked that my family had never brought Dylan up to me. Half jokingly, I told Ali to "hook it up." Everyone who knows Ali knows that she has successfully matched multiple married couples with each other, and she takes this job seriously, so of course by that evening I had a text from Ali inviting me to a game night with her, Peter, and Dylan at their condo. Side Note: I later found out that a couple years prior to us meeting, amidst a few ECC moms hassling Dylan about who they're going to hook him up with, my mom, Missy, told Dylan about me, stating, "You and my daughter. Molly, would be perfect together, but she's in Denver, probably for the rest of her life. Good luck getting her back!" At our game night, Dylan and I both immediately felt a spark, and he asked for my phone number at the end of the night. I continued to receive texts and calls. With limited options for dates, as restaurants and most other public places were closed, we spent our time together going on walks, getting ice cream from Lic's drive thru, hanging out with my family since they all already knew Dylan, having bon fires, and playing lots of golf. Fun Fact: We didn't go on our first date in public until Dylan visited me in CO. We went to a mountaintop restaurant in Boulder, called Flagstaff. My interviews in Denver continued virtually while I was home, and finally I got the bittersweet news that I had received a job offer in Denver, but that they would allow me to have a start date after Easter, meaning I had a couple more weeks at home. Before we knew it, Dylan and I were spending every day together, whenever we could find the time. I went back to Denver to start my new position, and Dylan and I decided to date long distance. Long distance can be a blessing, because you really get to know each other by talking on the phone and texting. We decided that we would try to see each other every 2 weeks, and we stayed true to this, other than a couple times where we went 4-5 weeks without a visit. Those times were tough, and as we became more serious, I knew I was ready to join the rest of my family and move back home to Evansville. I moved home in January 2021 and hurried to get my insurance licenses, bought Lancaster Insurance, Dylan and I were engaged by May, found a home that we love, and we continue to grow together. The birdhouse that Dylan hung that day is now in our yard. We're blessed to get to go through life's beauty, as well as life's challenges together forever!
