Emily's home town and one of the jewels of Yorkshire. Mention Ilkley and, almost without exception, people adopt a funny face, bob their heads and begin singing about the dangers of walking on the town’s moors without a hat – On Ilkla Moor Baht ’at – usually in a terrible Yorkshire accent. It's the gateway to Wharfedale, and the Yorkshire Dales beyond, but its also surrounded by its own heathery and rocky moorland, and the famous Cow and Calf Rocks. Follow your walk on the beautiful Ilkley Moor with a trip to Betty's for a traditional afternoon tea... or if you fancy something slightly stronger, pop into Bar t'at, the local pub where Emily spent a lot of time both behind and infront of the bar. Mention her name to the old timers and you might even get a free drink.
Another beautiful northern spa town. It even comes equipped with its very own Turkish Baths, which is well worth a visit for some pre/post wedding relaxation! This is the closest town to the English Wedding venue. If you can, make sure you take some time to have a wander around and take in the beautiful surroundings.
York, the beautiful medieval city and capital of Yorkshire, is only a 50 minute drive or a 45 minute direct train from Harrogate; or a 20 minute train ride from Leeds. Go to experience the beautiful cobbled streets filled with small, independent shops; or to visit the famous York Minster, one of the most striking cathedrals in Europe.
The dramatic abbey ruins at Fountains are the largest monastic ruins in the country. Step back into a rich and dramatic past and imagine what life would have been like for the monks who first came here all those years ago. It's a lovely day out and a great way to see more of the beautiful Yorkshire countryside.
Just up the road from Wharfedale Grange, the English Wedding Venue, this beautiful stately home has been lovingly restored. It was even used as the set for some of the scenes from the recent Downton Abbey film! For the nature buffs and bird watchers among you, its amazing Bird Garden is also home to over 40 species of birds from around the world.
Take a trip up into the Yorkshire dales, either for a drive along the twisting and winding stone walled lanes or for a lovely long walk through the tumbling hills. You won't regret it. This beautiful landscape will capture your heart. Follow it off with a proper pub lunch, there's plenty to choose from! For great walks I recommend Grassington, Burnsall, Appletreewick, Malham, Buckton (to name a few) but please let me know if you want any more details and I'll happily provide a route and a pub or two to stop at.
