Perseverance Trail (3 miles round-trip to Silverbow Basin, 2-4 hrs, considered easy to moderate) - With a well-marked trailhead at the end of Basin Road, this is the most popular and easily accessed trail system in Juneau, following Gold Creek into the valley behind downtown. Mount Juneau Trail (12 miles round-trip, 10 hrs., strenuous) - summits 3,576-foot Mount Juneau then continues along the ridge, eventually looping back to the valley floor. East Glacier Loop Trail (3.5-mile loop; 2-3 hr; moderate) - A good “leg-stretcher” that takes you up above the east side of Mendenhall Lake; good glacier views and possible black bear sightings. Point Bridget Trail (6 mile round-trip, 2.5 hours; very easy) - a very easy hike that will get you the best views north of Juneau. It's about a 15 minute drive out the road from the Methodist camp, or a 50 minute drive from downtown. Trail is mostly flat and ends in a very rocky beach that looks out to Berner's Bay.
Say hi to Ranger Julia and the rest of the Forest Service folks while you're there. Great wildlife viewing spot, including black bears, porcupines, beavers, bald eagles, and seasonally returning arctic terns, waterfowl, and sockeye and coho salmon. There are excursions such as kayaking and ice climbing available around the area, to be booked ahead of time.
We got engaged out here! This is Mim's favorite spot in all of Juneau. Head out to the North Douglas boat launch and keep driving along the 2 mile stretch of beach. Ideal for an evening bonfire, with potential whale spotting!
If you're interested in a bigger excursion and want to see bears, check out Pack Creek! Located on Admiralty Island, Pack Creek is within the Kootznoowoo Wilderness. The island's Tlingit name, Kootznoowoo, meaning "Fortress of the Bear," reflects its significance as a brown bear habitat with over 1,500 brown bears.
