You may be wondering why ‘McCoy’ is all over the place, this is the Bride’s last name after all. Well Jon has come to love and respect Mikel’s family so much that he’s decided he wanted to help keep the McCoy Legacy going and be a part of that legacy not just in family but in name as well. So please know, if anything is monogrammed the Bride gets to keep her last name! Funny how God works because Mikel swore she’d never change her name again! Love how God shows off like this! So we are having a Wedding Week! We will be in Miramar/Destin area from 10/19/24 - 10/25/24. We are inviting everyone to come enjoy this time with us. You may book with a discount through our hotel block near us or book wherever in the area you please! It’s beautiful and countless places to stay. We will have some activities going on in the beginning of the week (for the men especially while the women prep for wedding). As those are posted you’re welcome to join and let us know if you want to. Wedding festivities technically start with a Welcome Pool Party on 10/23/24! We are so stoked to celebrate! If you know the Bride, you know she doesn’t have a birthday, or even a birthday week, she has a birth month! So why wouldn’t she have a Wedding Week!?!? She’s going to make this spread out and milk the celebration for all it’s got!
How does anyone meet nowadays? Dating apps! We apparently swiped right and had to set up a date of sorts. Mikel loves playing pool and the casual atmosphere of a dive bar. She met tall, dark, and broody Jon for a night of pool and some drinks. Apparently it was love at first drink order for Jon and seeing how Mikel knew her way around a pool table only sealed the deal. The drink order was more like he was in for trouble with Mikel. Haha. Jon was not the outgoing goofy man y’all all know and love. When Mikel first met him he was quiet and mysterious but it only made her want to get to know him more. It didn’t hurt that he could beat her at pool that night. You know how competitive she is. While it took Mikel much longer to realize Jon was her missing piece in her and her girls’ lives she finally came around to realizing how good he was for her and to her.
While Jon started talking about marriage in May, Mikel was saying let’s at least get to 6 months of dating. However, by June she couldn’t see herself marrying anyone else. Jon can hardly keep a secret (beware!) and told Mikel he asked her dad’s permission to marry her on July 3, 2023. They started talking about a wedding openly with friends and family and Mikel started sending ring ideas to Jon almost immediately. Of course Mikel wanted at least a year to plan her dream wedding and was getting nervous about it taking anymore time. They went to a few ring stores and were overwhelmed by the pushy sales tactics and no ring was quite right for the job. One afternoon in late July they went to Shane Co. Mikel’s intention was to pick 3-4 designs that she liked so Jon could still surprise her with the proposal. She had picked out a few to look at outside of the case and Jon had asked for one in particular. Once she saw all 5 rings side by side she knew which one she wanted. It was a unique design with what looked like an ocean wave crashing on itself. She looked at Jon and couldn’t help but smile and tell him she in no way could pick 3 because the wave was the one. It was also the one he picked to be looked at outside the case. Then it became a waiting game of paying it off and Mikel basically planning the whole wedding now that she knew the proposal was happening. Of course no deposits were going to be made without a ring on her finger. Jon had told her he wanted to teach her how to drive stick shift because she had never learned and invited her out to some fields he was working in on a Saturday. (She knew what was happening it’s impossible to keep a secret from her). When she got there she was so nervous she stalled the truck engine 3 times just trying to get it to shift. Then got it going and was making the truck go forward in a rocking motion and asked what was wrong. Jon let her know it was because she wasn’t holding her foot steady on the gas pedal. When they got to the back of the field Jon had a blanket set up with candles, flowers, pictures, and champagne. He had the help of Kaycie, the matron of honor and Mikel’s best friend. It was short and sweet when Jon asked and Mikel said yes. Then Kaycie and her son came out of the trees to take pictures and celebrate. It was a sweet day and you can find pictures in the gallery!
We are blessed to have so many friends and family who love us! A friend of the bride, Tara, took our engagement pictures on a terribly cold day in December! They turned out perfect and even the girls played along. Super excited about them! Even with a last minute wardrobe change because River didn’t like her dress so both Mikel and River changed outfit options.
