The garden was established between 1930 and 1960 as the private garden of Walter and Marion Beck, inspired by the garden of 8th-century Chinese poet and painter Wang Wei (王維) (698–761). The 150-acre (61-hectare) garden has streams, waterfalls, terraces, retaining walls, rocks and plants based on principles of Chinese The garden is open Tuesday through Sunday, from May 7 to October 20; an admission fee is charged. ($6 on weekdays, $8 on weekends)

The Harlem Valley Rail trail—15 paved miles through Dutchess and Columbia County—cuts right through Amenia. Enjoy a scenic ride through rolling farm fields and dense woods on the bed of the New York and Harlem Railroad that ran from New York City to Chatham.

There are a handful of easy, moderate, and advanced hiking trails close by, including the Dover Stone Church trail (1.3 miles), Pine Knob Loop trail (2.6 miles), and Brace Mountain II (3.8 miles). Wing's Castle

Wing's Castle is an American marvel. Located 75 miles north of New York City, the castle was the brain child of artists Peter and Toni Ann Wing. Wing was raised on a dairy farm adjacent to where the castle now sits, the Millbrook Winery has become what was once the Wing Farm. The Castle is open for tours, during the hours and days listed below. Wed - Sun tours after Labor Day - Fall Sat & Sun tours. 12 - 4:30, last tour starts at 4pm, each tour last about 30min. Admission fee charged to enter grounds at gate, groups & buses welcome, please book large groups in advance. Walking on grounds prohibited without a paid tour entrance fee.
