We met as college students at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), where we were both members of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE). During his freshman welcome week, Javi attended Cocinando con SHPE, where incoming freshmen made empanadas with SHPE members. Michelle was helping run the event as a member of the SHPE Executive Board. Javi felt so at home at Cocinando con SHPE that he joined SHPE E-Board as the Freshman Representative. He also pledged Phi Iota Alpha (FIA), which hosted many events and parties that Michelle attended. Over the years, SHPE and FIA brought us closer together, and our friendship grew into a relationship. Nos conocimos cuando éramos estudiantes en el Instituto Politécnico Rensselaer (RPI), donde los dos éramos miembros de la Sociedad de Ingenieros Profesionales Hispanos (SHPE). After her graduation, Michelle got a job in CT and visited Javi at RPI on weekends. When Javi graduated, he got a job in NYC, and we enjoyed spending our weekends exploring the city. We love spending time with friends, going to Broadway shows, and checking out new places to eat. We also enthusiastically support each other's hobbies. Michelle loves aerial hammock, salsa, and bachata, and whenever she performs, Javi is always there. Javi has been taking guitar lessons, and Michelle loves listening to how much he has improved whenever she overhears him practicing. We have "Great Buildings of New York" knowledge cards that have photos and facts about historic New York City buildings. When we aren't sure what to do on a particular day, one of us usually asks, "Wanna do a card?" We randomly choose a card from the deck, go check out the building, take a selfie with it, and grab food nearby. For the proposal, Javi wrote "Wanna do a card?" in flower petals on the bed and made a custom card of the apartment building's 59th-floor terrace, where he proposed. We took a selfie and then went out to celebrate at Cafe Carmellini. After, Javi took Michelle to a private screening studio where we watched video montages that Javi made throughout our relationship.
