1. Emergency numbers in India are: “100” is the general emergency number/closest equivalent to 911 in the States. It largely connects to the police though. “108” is for Ambulance. For American citizens, please consider contacting the US Embassy instead of local officials per the state department guidelines. 2. It is still a cash economy so carry some Indian Ruppees, preferably in small denominations for change. 3. The country largely uses WhatsApp, a free messaging app, to communicate. We highly recommend downloading it. It is also a free way to video call people back home while away that runs on the internet! 4. The Voltage in India is 220 Volts while the one in USA is 110. The pins in the power points are also different. Carry converters to ensure your gadgets are all charged and don’t fry up. 5. There isn’t a tipping culture in the country and, if you desire, a small cash tip is all that is necessary. 6. American citizens do need a Visa to enter so make sure you have that sorted before you leave! (More on this in the travel section of our website). 7. Check in with your primary care provider about any vaccinations required or specific medical concerns that might affect you. 8. It will be the monsoon season and temperatures will be quite high so we recommend light, breathable, natural fabrics and shoes that can survive heavy rainfall.
India largely runs on WhatsApp, a free messaging app with end-to-end encryption. We recommend you download it as it is the platform the event organisers will be using to contact you to arrange travel to the venue and for sending any other wedding info too. Additionally, most services and businesses in India also operate on WhatsApp and it is a free and easy way to communicate across the planet without having to spend on International calling fees.
Ultimately, we want you to feel comfortable, feel free to wear whatever makes sense to you. We have provided information on the typical level of formality / attire for the various events so you are aware and can decide accordingly. As one other note, black (aside from suits) is generally considered unlucky. Indian attire is not required, though could be a fun option if you are so inclined.
We do not expect you to buy clothing for our wedding. However, if you wish to experience the clothes or want to use this opportunity to expand your wardrobe here are a few websites that deliver to the states. https://www.kalkifashion.com/ https://indiaspopup.com/ https://kritikadawar.com/collections/ready-to-ship https://www.samyakk.com/ Nordstrom also carries a brand named “Sani” that sells Indian wear.
