Travel Note
You can rent a car at Heraklion International Airport (HER), Chania International Airport (CHQ), or any major city. The island is larger than it may appear, so this may be a good option if you plan to do a lot of exploring. You can use the following to rent a car: Rental Center Crete – Car Hire (https://www.rental-center-crete.com) Lux Trans – Rent a car Crete (https://www.luxtranscrete.com/?lang=en) Safe Drive Rent a Car (https://safedrive-rentacar.gr/en/) Most car rental companies on Crete will require you to be 21 and to have held a license in your home country for a year. If you are under 25, you may face additional charges. It’s best to make sure to read all the fine print of your booking before you get to Crete. You cannot pay for your car rental in Crete with cash, so plan on using your credit card for the charges. The other reason you need a credit card is because of the excess charge – or hold a charge for the rental period. Holds can range anywhere from a few hundred euros to €1,000. The “excess charge” is typically stated in your reservation details.
Travel Note
Taxis are abundant on the island, though this can be a more expensive option. Be aware that drivers have been known to forget to turn on their meters, so you should always agree on a price before getting into the cab. Before hopping into a cab, it's also a good idea to write down the address of your destination to avoid any confusion as multiple places in Crete tend to have the same name. Buses are the only form of public transport in Crete. Local bus service is safe, reliable and cheap. There is an extensive network which makes it relatively easy to travel around the island. Fares are government-regulated and very reasonable by European standards. Tickets are bought at kiosks before boarding on the bus and the price varies from €1.10 or €1.50 and €5.00 for a day. You can try the Moovit app for Crete public transit. If you would be more comfortable with guided tours instead of exploring on your own, you can book tours/excursions with viator.com.
