Located about 30 minutes from the center of Lake Placid, Whiteface Mountain is a must see for all of the adventure lovers! It's home to the greatest vertical drop east of the Rockies and has over 90 trails.
There are so many fun winter activities for all ages in Lake Placid. Speak with your hotel regarding on-site fun (ice skating, snow shoeing, etc.), but be sure not to miss out on these favorites offered directly on Mirror Lake! Toboggan Chute: A 30-foot tall converted ski jump trestle sends toboggans down ice-covered chutes onto frozen Mirror Lake. Depending on weather conditions toboggans can travel over 1,000 feet once they reach the frozen lake surface. Visit http://www.northelba.org/?page=government/park-district/toboggan-chute or call (518) 523-9516 for more information and to book tickets. Current admission prices are $15.00 for adults and $10.00 for students - CASH ONLY. Dog Sledding: When Mirror Lake freezes over, mushers set up shop along Main Street. Paul and I went dog sledding on our first Lake Placid getaway and had an absolute blast. Two companies offer the services : Mike Arnold Dog Sled Rides (518) 323-7622 / Thunder Mountain Dog Sled Tours (518) 891-6239.
Did you know Lake Placid hosted the Winter Olympics twice? Once in 1932 and most recently in 1980. Embrace the amazing history of this town through a tour of the Olympic Museum - view artifacts, photos, and videos, and visit the Olympic Center where athletes still continue to train and compete! For an all inclusive experience, purchase the "passport" ticket providing access to the museum, Whiteface gondola ride, Bobsled complex and the Olympic ski jump complex. Open Thursday through Monday 10am - 5pm.
