Maroon Bells Scenic Area

Maroon Bells Scenic Area

Maroon-Snowmass Trail, Aspen, CO 81611

White River National Forest – , CC BY-ND 2.0, via Flickr The Maroon Bells are undoubtedly one of the most photographed spots in Colorado, and for a good reason. However, within this area, there are Aspen hidden trails that give visitors a chance to experience peace away from the busier paths. Among these trails, the Maroon Lake Trail leads hikers around the iconic Maroon Lake. A flat, easy 1-mile loop, it’s perfect for families and those looking for a leisurely stroll. During your walk, you’ll enjoy awe-inspiring reflections of the Maroon Bells on the lake’s surface, especially during sunrise. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can branch off onto the more challenging trails leading deeper into the expansive landscape, where seclusion awaits you. Be sure to carry water and snacks, as the trails can be quite extensive. The Maroon Bells area is also a great place for fall foliage, transforming into a colorful spectacle that is truly enchanting.

Local tip: Because this trail gets so crowded, reservations are required to access the trailhead either in a personal vehicle or via shuttle. See Maroon Bells Scenic Loop. Distance: 3.5 miles out & back Elevation Gain: 688 feet Difficulty: Moderate Estimated Time: 1.5-2 hours Dog Friendly: Yes, on-leash

Ashcroft Ghost Town

Ashcroft Ghost Town

Aspen, CO 81611

By the late 1880s, the town was already in serious decline, and by the late 1930s, its last resident had passed away, leaving Ashcroft to fed into the ghost town it is today. Visitors can explore Ashcroft with self-guided admission or join guided tours led by "resident ghosts" - Aspen Historical Society docents - who bring the town's history to life during summer open hours. Location: 11 miles up Castle Creek Road from the roundabout on Highway 82 Hours: Self-guided during fall, winter, and spring Docent on site June - September Admission: $5/adult, Children 18 & under free (must be accompanied by an adult) Free for active military personnel. Hanging Lake

Glenwood Canyon, CO 81601

Hanging Lake is a National Natural Landmark in Glenwood Canyon, Colorado. It was formed by a geological fault, leaving a travertine deposition that resulted in a stunning turquoise lake suspended in the canyon. The lake is fed by Bridal Veil Falls, which deposits minerals that give the water its vibrant color. Spouting Rock is a spectacular waterfall located 200 feet above Hanging Lake, where water gushes directly through the rockface of the cliff. Visitors can walk behind the falls for a unique perspective.
