Flight
Santorini’s airport is Thira (JTR). It’s a small airport that primarily serves domestic flights within Greece and seasonal flights from European cities. If you’re flying from the U.S., you’ll most likely connect through a major European hub like Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Munich, Paris, or London, then take a short flight to Santorini. There are no direct flights from the U.S. to the island. We recommend flying directly into Santorini if it’s your main destination or if you’re continuing on to other islands afterward. It’s the smoothest and fastest way to arrive and saves you time on transfers. From Athens (ATH), flights to Santorini take about 45 minutes and run several times a day. There are also seasonal flights to Santorini from other Greek islands like Mykonos, Crete, and Rhodes, especially in the summer months. After your stay in Santorini, it’s easy to continue your Greek island adventure by catching a flight or ferry to your next destination. Important layover tip: When landing in Europe—even just for a connection—you’ll typically go through passport control and may need to pass through security again, even if your bags were screened in the U.S. For a stress-free transfer, we recommend booking at least a 2–3 hour layover before your flight to Santorini. This gives you time to go through immigration and make it to your gate without rushing. A quick reminder about carry-on liquids: Most European airports enforce the 100ml (3.4oz) liquid rule for carry-ons. Even if TSA-approved, your liquids may be re-screened at your European layover airport. Keep any travel-size items in a clear zip-top bag to make the process easier. Airlines generally release international flights 11 months in advance, so flights for our June 8, 2026 wedding will begin appearing in July 2025. We recommend booking as early as possible to secure the best flight times and prices.
Travel Note
If you plan to visit other Greek islands before Santorini, consider flying into Athens and taking a ferry from the port of Piraeus. Ferry travel times range from 2 to 5 hours, depending on the route. To book your ferry, download the FerryHopper app or visit ferryhopper.com to book ferry tickets in advance. We recommend booking with SeaJets and selecting the Speedrunner Jet, the fastest and most comfortable ferry option. Ferry Tips Upgrade to VIP seating (€10–15 extra) for access to lounges with snacks and drinks. Be punctual—boarding and disembarking happen quickly. Travel light if possible, as managing large luggage during boarding can be hectic, but just know we did it multiple times with 4 suitcases and back packs. Book early, especially for the Speedrunner Jet, which sells out fast in summer. Taking the ferry is a wonderful way to experience Greece’s stunning islands and the Aegean Sea.
Rental Car
Sixt offers rental cars at Santorini airport. You don’t need a car unless you want extra flexibility - we did not rent a car when we visited. Santorini has taxis, buses, and walkable villages. Oia and Fira are pedestrian-only, so driving isn’t necessary for most guests. If you want to explore the island on your own schedule, small rental cars are available at the airport when you land.
