Question

Are there any helpful tips I should know before traveling to Providenciales?

Answer

Yes! Here are a few things you should know to make your arrival more enjoyable: - The locals call Providenciales "Provo". - Pack clothes for a day or two in your carry-on just in case your bags don't make it on the second leg of your trip. Most airlines have one flight a day to Provo, so your bags won't be sent until the following day. - The time it takes to get through customs will depend on if another plane lands right before yours. If that does happen, it will take around an hour to get through customs. There is an Express Lane option, that costs more and needs to be arranged prior to your arrival, however, it allows you to skip the line. - There is only one bathroom in the Arrivals area of the PLS airport, so go to the bathroom on the plane before landing. - The Arrivals area can be warm so it may be nice to have layers that you shed as well as a drink and a snack in your bag. - You can prearrange transportation from the airport to the resort or there are taxis available right outside the airport doors. It's typically around $14 per person and they only accept cash. (Most taxis don't have AC so keep that in mind.)

Question

Do I need to book anything like excursions or reservations before arriving on the island?

Answer

It's up to you! If you only have one day or time available for said meal or excursion, it may be a good idea to book in advance. Some of the restaurants will book up, especially if you have a larger group, however, you should be able to get into most of them if you book a few days ahead of time or even that day! Same goes for the excursions! The concierge is also able to assist with bookings at any point during your stay.

Question

Is tipping expected?

Answer

Tips of around 15% are expected for nearly all service jobs in the Turks and Caicos, such as taxi drivers and waiters. Some businesses charge a Service Charge, which is up to 10%, and different from an optional gratuity or tip. Service Charges are shared by all non-managerial employees of a business, and not just the person you deal with. If you are at a business that charges a Service Charge, you can opt to leave additional gratuity, which normally goes to your server only.

Question

Do I need to rent a car?

Answer

No, you do not. However, if you are going to be there for a week, it may make sense, as taxi's can add up. A lot of taxi driver's have cards or WhatsApp, so if you have a good experience, get their number so you can use them again. The Palms and The Sands have taxi's ready and waiting on site so you can walk right out and the bellhop will call one over. The Palms and The Sands do offer free bike rentals. There is also a shuttle that goes between the resorts every hour. If you do wish to rent a car, we've been recommended the following companies to use, and have been advised to book this in advance: - Scooter Bob's Auto Rental - Smart Choice Rentals

Question

Is there a grocery store or convenience store nearby?

Answer

Yes! Graceway IGA is the largest supermarket on the island and has the largest selection. This is a 6 minute drive from The Palms and The Sands. Alcohol is sold in the grocery store, however, not on Sundays. The Wine Cellar is a liquor store nearby and they do offer delivery to your resort. Both The Palms and The Sands have small convenience stores on property that offer a small selection of toiletries, snacks, and drinks, including alcoholic beverages.
