The History of our Venue

The Century Club

We were very intentional about where would tie the knot! Kansas City is special for both Max and Meghan as they've reached many milestones here both separately and then together. Max's family is from KC and his roots and connections to the city itself run deep. Max's grandfather, who he is named after, owned and operated two bars in downtown Kansas City: Lauralie and the Roaring Twenties. After we toured the Century Club, we found out that both bars were on the same corner of downtown as our venue. In fact, Max's father Mike even recalled his time spent in our space back when he was a young boy. For us that sealed the deal! Meghan moved to Kansas City to pursue her master's in Art History which she achieved in 2016. She is currently in a Ph.D. program at UMKC in history and art history. You can imagine how appealing this historical tie was for her! Rooting themselves in history, Meghan and Max did some digging into the history of the Century Club in the historic Mark Twain Tower. "Constructed in 1923, Kansas City's historic Mark Twain Tower which was also known as the Continental Hotel connects several aspects of history from the rise of athletic clubs to the effects of the Great Depression and urban history. The building was home to the Kansas City Athletic Club which formed during the 1880s as the club moved into the building in the 1920s. The Continental Hotel took over the historic skyscraper in the 1930s and maintained ownership until the 1970s, although the Athletic Club continued to occupy several floors. The Playboy Franchise also operated a Playboy Club within the hotel during the 1960s. Similar to many other buildings in the downtown area, the structure now operates as an apartment complex and event space." One thing we forgot to mention- we put a deposit on the place before it was finished!!! I know, you're right, it was absolutely crazy. But, we trusted our gut that renovations to the ball room would uphold the classic elegance of the Kansas City of old. Luckily, once finished, we were blown away with just how fabulous the space looks. We are excited to share a piece of this Kansas City history with you as we celebrate the start to our forever.
