How We Met

Spring 2016

Nick and Meg met in their sociology of law discussion group at UW-Madison spring semester 2016. Meg was quickly smitten with Nick and would arrive early to class to talk with the cute, funny guy from Utah. Nick, also smitten, wanted to take his shot and asked Meg one day, "Who would win in a fight: a gorilla or a polar bear?" The question, which sparked a lively debate also sparked the start of a romance because, after that, Meg worked up the courage to ask Nick on a date to the comedy club (a polar bear would win in the fight, by the way). The night of the first date arrived, and it was off to a rocky start. Meg was late, so they had to sit in the back of the comedy club in a booth with several other strangers. Nick and Meg sat several inches apart on the booth and kept their eyes locked on the performing comedy. Neither of them laughed. The awkwardness was palpable. An awkwardness that would even make Napoleon Dynamite cringe. Thankfully, both Meg and Nick were able to laugh it off and, to Meg's relief, Nick asked her on a second date. The second date went much better. This time with Nick telling the jokes. He pulled out the, "USDA outlawed round bales of hay . . . because cows weren't getting a square meal each day" joke. Love was in the air. The two have been going on dates and telling jokes ever since.

The Proposal

February 2024

For their 8 year anniversary, Nick planned a surprise of Meg's lifetime. On the Friday before their anniversary, Nick told Meg to pack her bags . . . they were going to New York City! It was a whirlwind weekend. Nick surprised Meg with a dinner and tickets to a Broadway show, but the best surprise was yet to come. When they got back to their hotel room after the Broadway show, Nick knew the moment was right and asked Meg to marry him. And Meg said, "Yes!" No jokes this time.
