How we met

September 2014

We met our freshman fall at Princeton when we sat across from each other in Writing Seminar on the second day of classes. Tim had a tendency to roll in ~15 minutes or so after the 11 AM start time, while Megan consistently volunteered him to take on any of the out-loud readings because she liked his accent. We became friends after realizing that we were both on Princeton’s rowing teams, a friendship that persisted even when Megan turned down Tim’s request for a date that November. By spring we were meeting up a few mornings a week – supposedly to study, but more often devolving into a blow-by-blow of the weekend’s previous rowing races. Things turned romantic that summer, when Tim spent a week showing Megan around London, and we began officially dating back on campus the following fall.

The Proposal

April 2019

We dated through the rest of college, surviving obstacles including internships, theses, graduation, and while trying to help, Megan spelling Tim’s name wrong on his official thesis cover page. We snagged a cute apartment in New York, and started life together there in 2018. A year later, on the first warm weekend in April, Tim suggested an impromptu trip back to Princeton for the day, to walk around campus and get dinner. We walked past our freshman year dorms, favorite study spots, and down to the boathouse and lake at the bottom of campus – where Tim told Megan they were going to take out a boat. Megan was a bit concerned because she felt they should really have a coaches’ permission to take a boat, and Tim did not actually know how to drive one of these (though luckily she did). But Tim had everything arranged, down to keys waiting in the boat. The sun was just beginning to set as we drove down the lake, only pausing as we got to the finish line of the racecourse, where Tim went to the front of the boat and got down on one knee. When Megan said yes, family and friends jumped out from behind the parked cars on land to celebrate with us.
