Train
The DC Metro system is an easy way to get around the city without a car. It can take you from Ashburn all the way into Downtown DC. Here is how to use it if you would like: 1. Download the app: It is called "Washington DC Metro and Bus." You may also download "Citymapper" for maps and directions. 2. Get a fare card: Buy a SmarTrip card at any Metro station vending machine. Or, if you prefer, you may add it to your Apple/Google Wallet. 3. Load about $10–$20 to start (rides usually cost ~$2–$6 depending on distance/time). 4. Entering the station: Tap your SmarTrip card or phone at the fare gate. Follow signs for your line color (likely Silver line) and final destination (this matters more than the direction). 5. On the platform: Check the electronic signs for the next train. Make sure the line color and end station match your route. 6. Riding: Trains come about every 5–15 minutes. Announcements and maps inside show each stop. 7. Exiting: Tap your card/phone again when leaving (fare is calculated then). Helpful Tips: The Metro runs roughly 5am–midnight (later on weekends). Google Maps works great for directions.
