FAQs

Question

What should I wear?

Answer

We feel strongly that our guests should wear whatever sparks joy for them! Typically, guests will wear “party attire” to an Indian Wedding Ceremony and Reception. Everyone is welcome to wear traditional Indian clothing, but guests who are more comfortable in their own cultural attire are encouraged to wear what makes them happy!

Question

I want to buy Indian clothing to wear to the wedding, where do I start?

Answer

Step 1: Decide what kind of Indian attire you want to wear. There are several options! Women: Some options include Salwar Kameez, Anarkali, Ghagra/Lehenga, or Saree. You may need some help to tie a Lehenga or Saree, but fear not! There will be a surplus of Indian aunties to help if that's something you desire. To avoid the fuss, you can get a Salwar Kameez or Anarkali dress as those are very easy to wear! Men: Life is so much easier for you. You only have one option: Kurta Pajama. You can choose to get one with a vest if you want to look fancy! Nonbinary Pals: Alok Menon has good inspo. Step 2: Find the size that fits. Women: Most Indian clothing is stitched specifically to for you! Most websites will ask for your measurements of your shoulder length, bust circumference, waist circumference, and hip circumference. My tip: measure yourself once and have the numbers handy as you browse for clothing! Most websites will ask you to put in the numbers directly, but those that don't will have sizing charts (which you should double check before buying!). Men: Again, life is much easier for you. I'm pretty sure usual small, medium, large, and extra-large sizing applies for most websites. The only hiccup is that sometimes, the kurta will fit you perfectly, but the pants will be too small. In that case, my mom has often resorted to amazon to buy kurta pants in the color that makes the most sense. Kids: Sizing is usually by age. Once a kiddo is older than twelve, I would suggest going with adult sizing! Step 3: Find a good vendor. This is the hardest part (even for me). Check for local stores! It can be hard to tell which online vendors are ethical & sustainable while still being reasonably priced. Here's where I would start: https://www.utsavfashion.com/ https://www.hatkay.com/ https://www.houseofindya.com/ https://shopkynah.com/ https://www.cbazaar.com/wedding https://dorieatelier.com/ https://couturencore.com/ https://marigold.rent/ https://www.lashkaraa.com/

Question

Will I have time to change between the ceremony and the sangeet/ reception?

Answer

For those extravagant aunties out there wondering about this, the short answer is yes. You can use the cocktail hour for a costume change. I would encourage you to do what makes you happy, though! Because we’ve simplified our schedule, we expect that most guests will choose to wear the same outfit for the wedding ceremony and reception.
