It all started with tabouli. Bassem’s sister, Roula, was chopping parsley for a tabouli salad when she injured her wrist. Being the part-time pickleball player that he is, Bassem suggested she see a chiropractor to treat her wrist tendonitis. As fate would have it, Roula had been following @drmeccafayad on Instagram for some time and decided to book an appointment. Over the course of a few treatments, Mecca and Roula got to know each other. During one session, Roula’s phone, lying face down on the treatment table, began to ring. Mecca urged her to answer—just in case it was one of her kids calling from school. Sure enough, it was a FaceTime call from her brother, Bassem. When Mecca waved hello, holding a giant scraper in her hand, Bassem was immediately intrigued. After the call, he wasted no time and followed Mecca on Instagram. What followed was a lighthearted back-and-forth, starting with Bassem teasing Mecca about her Super Bowl party posts. (He’s a die-hard Mahomes fan, while she’s all about the 49ers). Their banter quickly turned into daily FaceTime calls, and the connection grew stronger by the day. On October 26, Bassem proposed at Lake Minnewanka—fitting, considering one of Mecca’s nicknames is Minnie. Talk about destiny: Minnie got engaged at Lake Minnie.
