From McKayla: In January of 2019, I met with Rev. Christana Wille McKnight, the minister at First Parish Taunton, to discuss a potential internship at her congregation. Rev. Christana told me a little bit about their church's administrator, Lindi, who was also nonbinary. I was super interested to meet them! Rev. Christana invited me to attend a worship service to get the feel of the church, and I went to their Welcoming Congregation service, one that celebrated First Parish Taunton's and Unitarian Universalism's welcome of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, asexual, polyamorous, etc. individuals. It was a beautiful service, filled with a lot of rainbow flags and love. And there, I met Lindi, and heard a story about their response to homophobia and discrimination in the city of Taunton. It was amazing to meet them--I was a little star struck. Both of our congregations attended the Building Bridges Conference, we got the chance to hang out during events at First Parish Taunton, and we became friends--or whatever you call two people who had a sense that their lives would be forever entwined. Soon, it was clear: Lindi--someone who is an angel walking this Earth, someone with a heart of gold, with a beautiful sense of virtue, passion for justice, love of their family, ridiculously awesome (nerdy) sense of humor, and dedication to their community--was the one for me. I chose to be with Lindi, and I would choose them again and again. Flash forward through the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, adventures (virtually, mostly) with family and friends, and time for our hearts to meld as one, and we arrived here, to the year we would be married. It feels like we've known and loved each other all our lives, and that we were simply waiting for the Universe to bring us together. I love you always, Lindi. Here's to our forever. <3
From Lindi: On August 11th 2021, at 7pm, I pulled off a surprise that was 3 weeks in the planning and over a year and a half in the making. McKayla was convinced that I was simply set dressing the sanctuary at First Parish Taunton for a small film project Josh and I were doing. That whole plan was a lie. I was in fact decorating the sanctuary for a very specific purpose...to PROPOSE! The photos on this website come from this amazing day. The sanctuary at FPT has held a special place in both of our hearts for various reasons, but it holds a joint space for being the place that helped to bring us together. There was no other place that seemed as perfect as that room. So with the help of some trusted friends and the support of McKayla's family, I asked Mckayla to marry me and spend our forever together. To NO ONE's surprise, they said YES!!! And then, McKayla decided that they wanted me to know what it was like to be proposed to. On a rainy afternoon in Westport, McKayla's plan was put into action. I arrived at Westport Town Beach, just as the rain began falling, it continued to pick up strength as I walked down the beach to each station McK had set up with a little candle and a note. When I got to the end of the path McK was waiting for me (and by then it was almost pouring), they told me they want to weather all of life with me and asked me to marry them... and since I already had proposed to them, the answer was an emphatic YES! (Yup, we're kind of ridiculous. <3) We love you, our family and friends, and we can't wait to celebrate the joining of all our lives together on this day!
