Travel Note
When we travel from New Jersey to Charlottesville we usually prefer to go by car. Here are two recommended routes and some tips below that we have learned over the years! I-95: The most direct route to Charlottesville. Take I-95 to Washington DC, then take I-495 around DC to I-66, and then head south on Route 29 towards Charlottesville. Approximately 6 hours without traffic. - Make sure to time your trip to avoid rush hour traffic in Baltimore and DC, about halfway through your drive. We recommend leaving before noon. - Navigation apps don’t take increasing traffic into account, so your ETA is may not always be accurate. - The Beltway around Washington (I-495) goes between suburban communities and doesn’t have any convenient spots to take a rest stop. Plan your breaks accordingly! I-81: The scenic route. Take I-78 west to I-81, then go south to Harrisonburg, VA. There you can take US 33 east to Charlottesville (the VERY scenic route through rural areas, but somewhat faster). Or stay on the interstate until you reach I-64 and head west to Charlottesville. Approximately 6 hours and 30 minutes without traffic. - This route is longer than I-95 but avoids the traffic that can build during rush hour. - We recommend timing your drive south so you arrive in Charlottesville before nightfall. The roads east to Charlottesville go through the mountains and can be difficult to navigate in the dark. - If you take I-64, make sure to stop at at the scenic overlooks!
