While it is a bit of a drive outside of the city, if you have the time it is more than worth it to visit for the trails and very scenic views of southern Wisconsin in its fall glory.
The Arboretum became very familiar to us on our Sunday afternoons in Madison while we were doing long distance. It was rare that a weekend visit would go buy without some time spent exploring the trails and lakes. The Arboretum has paved and off road trails, a huge variety of beautiful plants, and is an excellent escape only a few minutes from downtown.
A beautiful hiking destination, much like Blue Mounds and the Arb, fall colors will abound this time of year.
The State Capital at the heart of Madison is a great place to walk around, grab a coffee (Wonderstate is excellent) or a bite to eat (Marigold and The Old Fashioned are our picks) and soak in the heart of Madison. From the square, walk over to Monona Terrace for great lakeside views and Frank Lloyd Wright-designed architecture.
One of our regulars here in Madison.
This place practically doubles as a second office for us and offers a great spot to sit and warm up after a nice fall walk through the arboretum.
Great pizza in the heart of the fun Monroe Street Neighborhood.
Probably one of the more unique dining experiences we have had in Madison, the wait staff is excellent here and you might just get surprised with an unexpected violin serenade.
For the bike friends, please bring your bike! October is one of the best times to ride around the Madison area as you will be treated to pleasantly crisp weather, great fall colors, and low traffic on Dane county's quiet backroads. Check out the link for some of Tim's favorite rides in the area.
