A handfasting ceremony is an ancient ritual where a couple’s hands are bound together with cords or ribbons to symbolize their union, commitment, and mutual vows. It’s a deeply symbolic act rooted in pre-Christian Celtic traditions and often incorporated into modern weddings for its ancestral honor, spiritual, or cultural resonance. This ceremony holds special personal significance for Susan, owing to her Irish and Welsh ancestry.

Why Avebury Henge & Stone Circle?

Nestled in the rolling chalk hills of Wiltshire, England, the village of Avebury cradles one of the largest and oldest Neolithic stone circles in the world. Unlike its more famous cousin Stonehenge, Avebury invites intimacy: here, you can walk among the stones, touch them, and feel the weight of five millennia humming beneath your feet. We will exchange vows beneath the open sky, encircled by towering sarsen stones that have stood sentinel since 2600 BCE. Truly a magical place!

I won't be able to make it to England - Will there be an event later in Maryland?

YES! In addition to our service at Avebury, we will celebrate with friends and family in the U.S. this summer when we host a reception in our new home in Westminster, Maryland.
