Our local board game cafe! Tyler and May spend a lot of time here. Game passes are $7 and you can stay all day if you like! There are craft cocktails and mocktails, NA beer, and amazing sandwiches and coffee. Be sure to get an Old Man Drink from Colin, the big red bearded manager, or compliment Tim on his music taste if you hear The Mountain Goats playing.
May has worked here on and off since college as a taproom specialist, artist, tour guide, production stand-in, you name it. They've been good to her and offered a lot of flexibility as she's been freelancing and taking classes over the years. Be sure to drop by! They'll probably have one of May's favorite beers, The Silent World, on draft around this time of year.
Excellent cheap tacos, great vegan options, beautiful outdoor space. Back in the day when this venue was Go Bar, May used to go dance at Nana Grizol shows every New Year's Eve.
Excellent coffee, pastries, and goodies to stock up in your kitchen. The ethiopian spice blends will make you cry over your potatoes. Be sure to look for Phin behind the cheese counter and ask him for recommendations. This man knows his cheese. Not open Mondays. Try 1000 Faces or Molly's.
May's first job in Athens, and Tyler's too! May worked with preparatory staff designing, installing, and maintaining exhibits. Tyler was in the gift shop. We totally missed each other while we were working here. Free activity with some really cool rotating exhibits and an amazing permanent collection. Look for the hunting portrait with a deer with its tongue sticking out in the background looking dumb.
Right next door to Avid Bookshop, this is a great spot for a glass of wine, a snack, or negroni. Daydream about being May in Cortona in 2016 under a tassled pink umbrella with your sketchbook out. For a full meal, visit their sister restaurant down Lumpkin Street, ZZ and Simone's. Don't miss out on the flatbread with whipped lemon ricotta. In fact, get two. ZZ's takes reservations.
Dream Saturday: coffee and a bagel from Buvez followed by thrifting across the street at Habitat for Humanity. Not open Mondays.
Locally sourced meats and amazing crumbly biscuits. Get the Fire Bird with the sriracha honey if you're not afraid of a little spice. This place is worth calling in for. It can be busy on weekend mornings, so I'd call it in for pick up and go eat it at Ben Burton park by the water.
