We met on a spring break trip participating in service projects through an organization called Students Today Leaders Forever. After introducing himself to me as the third Matt majoring in civil engineering on the trip, I at least knew I wouldn't forget his name. On a nine day bus trip, you become very comfortable, very quickly. By the third day, we were bantering with our matching humor: sarcastic and witty, with a hint of smart ass. After returning home from the trip, I knew this person needed to be in my life, whether as a friend or more. We were lucky enough for it to turn into the latter.
In July of 2018, we were planning to spend a week in the mountains of Colorado with my family camping, hiking, and taking in the scenery. For months, Matt had been begging me to hike to Emerald Lake while in the Rockies. Even though he knew it was on the agenda, he continued to ask. And make sure. And ask again. I knew it looked beautiful, but didn't know why he was so adamant. Upon starting the hike up to Emerald Lake and realizing it was much steeper in certain areas than I was informed of, I had some choice words for Matt and his beloved Emerald Lake. However, the hike was well worth it when I was able to lay my eyes on God's beautiful creations. I was so relieved to be at the top and have the chance to SIT and soak it in. However, Matt had a different idea. He was insistent on giving me a synopsis of our relationship and I thought, "Will you be quiet already?" Before I knew it, he pulled me up to stand as he was down on one knee holding the most gorgeous ring. This is where I blacked out! Once I heard other hikers clapping and whistling, I realized what was happening. We were saying YES to forever! Matt knows how much value I place on my family, so for him to make them a part of this moment made it all the more special.
