Buena Vista River Park
The hub for all local trails. Cross the footbridge over the Arkansas River to access the Barbara Whipple Trail System, Midland Bike Trail, and the broader Fourmile network — something for every level with stunning river and mountain views throughout. Bike rentals available right at the trailhead at Black Burro Bikes.
Cottonwood Pass
~25 miles west of downtown. Drive to 12,126 feet for some of the most breathtaking views in Colorado. No hiking required — the view from the parking lot alone is worth the trip.
Ptarmigan Lake Trailhead
~14 miles west of downtown. A 6.8-mile moderate hike through wildflower meadows to a stunning alpine lake with sweeping views of Mt. Yale and the Collegiate Peaks.
Browns Creek Falls
A 6-mile, easygoing trail through pine and aspen forest that ends at a beautiful waterfall. Perfect for a relaxed morning in the mountains.
KODI Rafting
Family-owned since 1986 and widely considered the best outfitter on the Arkansas River. Trips run through Browns Canyon National Monument with options for every skill level. Book ahead — they fill up fast in August.
St. Elmo, co
~40 min south. One of Colorado's most well-preserved ghost towns with 43 original buildings still standing. Free to visit and a fascinating slice of Colorado's mining history.
