Construction of the fortress of São José da Ponta Grossa began in 1740, according to the original project of Governor Brigadeiro Silva Paes, functioning as one of the cornerstones of the triangular defense system of Barra Norte on the Island of Santa Catarina. In the 18th century, it had three cannon batteries, armed with 31 pieces of artillery, which were found there during the invasion of the Spanish, which occurred in 1777, having been practically abandoned and depredated after this historical episode. In 1938, Fortaleza was declared a National Historical and Artistic Heritage and, in 1992, after its restoration, it was managed by the Federal University of Santa Catarina (Ufsc). Together with the São Caetano Battery, built later to the east of the fortress, it is the stage for one of the most beautiful architectural and landscape scenarios on the Island of Santa Catarina.
Mole beach is also known for its strong and long waves making it ideal for surfing.
