Syracuse's Hancock Airport is a much larger airport than Ithaca's, and is ~1-1.5hrs drive from downtown Ithaca. Hancock Airport offers car rentals from major companies - Enterprise, Hertz, Budget, Avis - as well as several bus services that travel between Syracuse and Ithaca, including Greyhound and Flixbus.

Flying to Ithaca's airport is certainly an option, especially for guests from the NYC/NJ area. Ithaca airport is considerably smaller than Syracuse's airport, and only serves direct flights to/from Newark (NJ) and JFK airports.
