Question

What are some Norwegian Wedding Customs an American should know?

Answer

Speeches: Do not eat during speeches—cutlery down, phones away, and enjoy the words. Toasts: Simply raise your glass and say “Skål!” when a toast is made. No clinking necessary. Dress Code: Please dress formally—suits or tuxedos for men, long dresses for women.

Question

Wearing White

Answer

In American weddings, white is traditionally reserved for the bride. We kindly ask guests to avoid wearing white or very light tones.

Question

How long is the wedding?

Answer

It’s a full-day celebration! The ceremony begins at 2 PM, followed by a Champagne Reception with light appetizers. Dinner lasts about 3–4 hours, and then the after-party continues until 2 AM+.

Question

How do I get to the wedding venue (Huso Lodge)?

Answer

There are a few different ways to get to Huso Lodge, depending on what suits you best. Option 1 – Rental Car (Recommended) For the most flexibility, you can rent a car at Oslo Airport. The drive to Huso Lodge takes about 3–3.5 hours, giving you the freedom to stop along the way and enjoy the beautiful Norwegian scenery. Rental Car options at Oslo Airport: Hertz, Avis, Europcar, and Sixt Option 2 - Express Bus Depending on departure time, you may also take the Vy express bus (VY170) from Oslo Bus Terminal to Hemsedal. We recommend checking the Vy app or vy.no for the most up-to-date route and departure times. Option 3 – Train & Bus For the most budget-friendly option, take the Airport Express (Flytoget) from Oslo Airport to Oslo Central Station (Oslo S) — it’s only 20–25 minutes. From there, hop on a Vy regional train to Gol Station (about 2 ¾–3 hours), and complete the journey with a local bus/taxi (about 30-40 minutes) or coordinate with us to have someone pick you up at Gol Station to get to Huso Lodge. Helpful Links: Flytoget: https://flytoget.no/en/
Vy: https://www.vy.no/en Tickets: Tickets can be booked in advance through the Vy app or at vy.no, and we recommend doing so for the smoothest journey.

Question

What if the weather isn't the best?

Answer

We’re planning for an outdoor ceremony and a champagne reception in the farmyard unless the weather makes it necessary to move indoors. Dinner will be indoors in a barn with open doors and may be chilly. We’ll also be doing a torch walk to the after-party, so make sure to pack comfy shoes, a jacket, and maybe an umbrella.

Question

What kind of weather should I expect in July?

Answer

July in Norway can vary depending on location. In Oslo, it’s typically mild and pleasant, with daytime temperatures around the low 70s°F. In Hemsedal, it’s cooler—usually in the high 50s°F during the day, with chillier evenings. Since Huso Lodge is in the mountains, we recommend bringing layers, a warm sweater or coat for the evening, and comfortable shoes for both indoor and outdoor settings. Question

Do I need cash before I go?

Answer

No, you will not be needing cash at all. However, bring a visa/mastercard as American Express is usually denied at smaller businesses.

Question

When using my credit card in Norway, should I pay in USD or NOK?

Answer

Always choose NOK (Norwegian Krone), the local currency. Paying in USD may seem convenient, but it usually comes with extra fees and a worse exchange rate. Your card will automatically handle the conversion for you, often at a better rate.

Question

Do I need to tip in Norway?

Answer

Tipping is not generally expected in Norway. However, it’s common to leave a small tip at restaurants or bars if you’re especially happy with the service. There’s no set percentage—tipping is always optional.

Question

Where can I find practical travel information about Norway?

Answer

For general travel tips and practical information, we recommend the Visit Norway Travel Tips A–Z page, which includes useful information about getting around, currency, and other things that may be helpful during your stay. https://www.visitnorway.com/plan-your-trip/travel-tips-a-z/

Question

Will my electronics work in Norway?

Answer

Hair dryers and clothing irons are provided at Huso Lodge, so you don’t need to bring your own. Norway uses a different voltage (230 V) than the U.S., so U.S. hair dryers and irons won’t work without a voltage converter. For most modern devices like phones and laptops (which typically support 100‑240 V), you only need a plug adapter to make your U.S. plugs fit Norway’s outlets. Norway uses Type F European sockets.

Question

How do I use public transportation in Norway?

Answer

Public transportation in Norway is generally very easy to use. In Oslo, the Ruter app is especially useful, while in Bergen the Skyss app is the best option for local transport. For trains and longer journeys, Vy is also very helpful. If you are planning more complex journeys across different parts of the country, Entur, Norway’s official national travel planner, can also be a helpful tool for finding routes, checking schedules, and buying tickets. https://ruter.no/en https://ruter.no/en/plan-journey/the-ruter-app https://www.vy.no/en https://www.vy.no/en/travelling-with-vy/app https://www.skyss.no/en/ https://www.skyss.no/en/tickets-and-prices/buying-tickets/skyss-app/

Question

Is it easy to drive in Norway?

Answer

Yes—driving in Norway is generally very straightforward. If you’re renting a car, just keep a couple of key differences in mind: roundabouts are very common, and you must always yield to traffic already in them. Also, unlike in many parts of the U.S., turning right on a red light is typically not allowed.

Question

Can I drink the tap water in Norway?

Answer

Yes—absolutely. Tap water in Norway is clean, safe, and great to drink, so there’s no need to buy bottled water unless you prefer to.
