Henry & Manuela

Things To Do

The Wedding Website of Manuela Inés Quintero Fehr and Henry Foster Mason
If you have some extra time and are thinking about extending your trip, we highly recommend visiting some of Costa Rica’s most breathtaking destinations. These spots are a few hours from San José, but trust us, they’re worth the trip! The photo above is of Henry and me doing parasailing in Manuel Antonio! No matter what you choose, we hope you enjoy your time in Costa Rica. We’ve also put together a sample travel itinerary with ideas. Check it out:

Mock Itinerary

San José

San José, San José Province, Costa Rica

For those who prefer to stay closer to the city or don't have time to extend their trip, San José has plenty to offer! Visit the Museo del Oro Precolombino, Museo del Jade (the largest collection of American jade), or the Art Museum at La Sabana (formerly the airport terminal, now home to Costa Rican art). Take a tour of the stunning National Theatre, or explore the Central Market & Artisans Market for local eats, crafts, and souvenirs. Interested in a coffee tour? While technically not in San José, head to Heredia for the Café Britt Coffee Tour. It offers a peek into coffee farming. Foodies will love Barrio Escalante or La Nunciatura. Recommendations: Franco, Casa Dominga, Silvestre, otro bar (drinks), and Jardin de Lolita. In Escazú (where the wedding is!), enjoy pastries at Mocapan, pizza at facci, coffee at Bulali, drinks at Caffé Negroni, & dinner at Feroz. In Santa Ana, enjoy brunch at Picnic Deli, dinner at Bacchus, and hike Hacienda La Chimba for stunning views.

Parque Nacional Volcán Poás

Poás, Provincia de Alajuela, Costa Rica

(Under 1.5 hours from Escazú) Poás Volcano offers breathtaking views of one of the largest active craters in the world. The park features an easy, paved trail leading to a viewing platform overlooking the crater’s bright turquoise lake. You must reserve tickets in advance, as daily entry is limited. Additionally, since the volcano is currently active, we recommend checking the park’s status a few days before your visit to make sure it’s open. Safety closures can happen depending on volcanic activity.

La Paz Waterfall

Alajuela Province, Costa Rica

(about 1.5 hours from Escazú) The reserve has it all: five stunning waterfalls cascading through lush jungle, gentle walking trails perfect for all fitness levels, and a vibrant wildlife sanctuary where you can spot sloths, toucans, monkeys, and more up close. It is an enjoyable and relaxing experience for visitors of all ages and a wonderful way to immerse yourself in Costa Rica’s incredible natural beauty all in one place.

Arenal Volcano

Alajuela Province, Costa Rica

(3 hours from San José) -Arenal is home to the most iconic and active volcano in the Country. -Relax in the natural hot springs like Tabacón or The Springs Resort Hot Springs. -Visit/hike La Fortuna Waterfall -Visit/hike Rio Celeste -Ziplining is one of the best things to do in La Fortuna. It has been a while since I've done it but there are so many canopy tours you can book with. -Visit Lake Arenal

Manuel Antonio Beach

Quepos, Puntarenas Province, Costa Rica

(3 hours from San José) One of Costa Rica’s most famous national parks, Manuel Antonio, is home to incredible wildlife and stunning beaches. Fun fact: This was the first beach Henry visited when he came to Costa Rica in 2018! -Keep an eye out for monkeys, sloths, macaws, and toucans as you hike to the beach. Once you’re there, be mindful of the wildlife; they are experts at sneaking up and stealing your snacks right from the shore! -Be sure to purchase your park tickets ahead of time. Pro tip: Arrive at sunrise! The park has a maximum capacity, and they close the entrance once it's reached. -If you’re looking for more beach time, head over to Playa Espadilla or Playa Biesanz.

Santa Teresa Beach

Santa Teresa Beach, Puntarenas Province, Costa Rica

(5-6 hours from San José) Santa Teresa is my favorite beach town in Costa Rica. This laid-back spot offers world-class surfing, incredible food, breathtaking sunsets, and nearby natural beauty. -Explore stunning beaches like Playa Carmen, Playa Hermosa, or Malpaís along the Pacific coast. -Don’t miss the Montezuma Waterfalls, a stunning set of three cascades along the Montezuma River that drop a total of 40 meters (130 feet). It’s a great spot for hiking and swimming. -Start your day at The Bakery, one of my favorite breakfast spots, known for delicious pastries, fresh bread, and plenty of tasty options. -For dinner, try Katana Asian Cuisine, a top Santa Teresa restaurant blending Thai and Japanese flavors. -Somos Café offers fresh, healthy dishes in a relaxed, inviting atmosphere. -End your day at Banana Beach Club, a beachfront restaurant with refreshing drinks and chill vibes. The perfect place to watch the sunset!

Hacienda Pinilla

Tamarindo, Guanacaste, Costa Rica

(4.5 to 5 hours from San José) Hacienda Pinilla is a gated beach resort community located in Guanacaste, near the town of Tamarindo. It’s home to several beautiful beaches (like Playa Avellanas), a golf course, nature trails, a beach club, and luxury villas and hotels (including the JW Marriott). It’s perfect if you’re looking for a mix of relaxation and resort-style amenities, with easy access to surf spots and sunset views.
