It all started at a Justin Bieber concert. Mary spun a wheel to try and win upgraded VIP tickets for her and her friends. She didn't get VIP, but she did land on a "Free Trip to Hawaii for 2 - All Expenses Paid". A month later, Mary got a call about this prize she won. Turns out, it was a timeshare company giving the trip away. And they had some stipulations - one being that whoever claimed it must be 30 years old. Mary was 28 at the time. So she needed someone who was 30 to claim the prize so she could go to Hawaii. And someone that would be willing to drive almost 2 hours outside of LA to go sit through a timeshare meeting. She sent out some texts to older friends to see if they wanted to accept her wild proposition. She got a lot of "hahahah you're crazy" aka NO texts. But one friend, Nick Sih, was quick to respond that although he wouldn't be able to go, he knows a guy that might be interested and he's 30. That guy was Stephen. (Come to find out, Stephen was only 29 at the time, but that will become irrelevant in this story) Nick told Mary "I do know a guy actually. Just met him. Retired NHL player. He just moved to LA a week ago. He's chill AF and is basically retired lol. I think he'd be down. Just asked him. You should meet regardless of this trip. I mean he's retired and just wants to rollerblade in every national park". Mary was intrigued as she also loved exploring national parks and after a quick stalk of his Instagram, she accepted Nick's referral. Then next thing you know, Nick put Stephen and Mary in a group chat & introduced them to one another. Stephen took it upon himself to text Mary separately and said "So tell me more about this timeshare". And Mary being Mary sent him an extremely long, detailed text message with all of the info he would need to know. She was by no means a "chill girl" and did not "play it cool". She figured she might as well just be herself and if it scared him away, then it wasn't meant to be. After ignoring her for about 6 hours, Stephen finally just called her up and they chatted (*flirted*) on the phone, making a plan to meet up the next day. Stephen invited Mary over to his place for dinner and they hit it off and the rest is history! Now I'm sure you're wondering... did they ever go to Hawaii?!!! No, they did not. It was a big scam. But their love is not.
