Mavericks is a world-famous surfing location and annual competition. Mavericks is located within a 10 minute walk from Oceano Hotel. The dynamic waves at Mavericks are created after a strong winter storm occurs in the Northern Pacific Ocean, which produce waves that routinely crest between 25-75 feet. The annual surf contest occurs anytime during the winter months with competitors traveling the globe to be a part of this epic experience. A 2 minute walk from Oceano Hotel leads to the California Coastal Trail. The Coastal Trail is a 1,200 mile trail that runs from the Oregon border to the Mexican border along the California Coast. Many parts of the Half Moon Bay Coast provide a scenic paved trail, which is ideal for walking, running, or biking along the ocean. The Bluffs by Mavericks surf spot is a moderate hike past the harbor and up to the bluffs with amazing views of the coastline. SHOPPING ON THE COAST There are many shopping opportunities on the Coastside, and a stroll through The Shoppes at Harbor Village next to Oceano Hotel or a 4 mile drive south to Downtown Half Moon Bay will take you on an adventure where you can visit boutique stores, galleries, restaurants and outdoor cafes, and bakeries. In addition to artsy shopping, visitors can take a historic tour of the buildings in Downtown Half Moon Bay on Main Street since the town is the oldest in San Mateo County, established in 1840.
