From Los Gatos and Boston, we signed up to live together after 30 minutes of chaotic facebook messaging as 2 of 20+ 2015 Teach For America corps members told to find roommates before we moved to Providence, RI. Weeks later we met outside the conference room of the RI Foundation after the first session of our orientation, exchanged smiles, “nice to meet yous” and hugs before going back inside. Over the next few days in between long sessions and programming we found ourselves having one on one conversations within groups of soon to be teachers. He wore baggy suits, she wore stylish dresses and our new teacher friends told us they saw a spark before either of us realized. Next, in Philadelphia for 5 weeks to teach summer school, we grew closer helping each other lesson plan, sharing our favorite music, our journeys to TFA and a passion for working with kids. We moved to Providence thinking this could be something real.
After moving to Salem for a hot minute (if you know you know) we headed back to Providence dressed up to make a day of going back to the city which had become home. We grabbed bagel sandwiches from our favorite spot and headed out of our way to get gas by the river. A gorgeous sunny day, we walked along the water, over the bridge and he got down on one knee in the spot where we first told each other “I love you” years before. She hugged him close and said “YES.” We asked two teenagers on a photo shoot to take pictures for us and excitedly called our families and closest friends to share the news. We’re so excited to celebrate with you in Ayr after a few global delays!
