We were introduced via EHarmony in February 2018. After a few written exchanges, we had our first date at the Porchlight in Chelsea, Lauren's NYC neighborhood. The conversation flowed over their shared love of baseball - but disdain for each others team - beer, world travels and poignant debates about whether the Amish pay taxes. After hopping to another bar in search of the perfect pint, their first date ended with a kiss at 1am on the corner of 10th and 23rd street. The next day, Rob texted Lauren to say that after consulting with his tax team at work, the Amish DO indeed pay taxes. He also shared a link to his recent 15 seconds of fame - an Arizona local news clip featuring Rob in Korea, being interviewed about his experience at the Olympics. Lauren knew immediately that he also thought the first date went pretty well...and they've talked everyday since.
December 19, 2020. Rob suggested we go into the city for the day to see the Rockefeller Tree - Lauren's favorite Christmas tradition. It was a gorgeous but cold day but we took the ferry from Hoboken to midtown to enjoy the city views and social distance. After walking around 5th Avenue to observe all the windows, lights and tree we headed back to Hoboken, again on the ferry. After getting off the ferry in Hoboken, Rob suggested we take our masks off since we'd had them on for several hours and there wasn't anyone around. It was only a short 5 minute walk back to our home but a nice breather in the cold air. It was a gorgeous night - there was snow on the ground and the sky was clear - the views of the city were beautiful and the Empire State Building was lit up in green and red. Although Lauren had JUST said "I can't wait to get home, we've been walking all day!", Rob suggested "let's go on a walk!" - so we agreed to 'loop the park' - our usual walk outside our building. As we approached the edge of the park which juts out over the river - Rob handed Lauren his phone and said, "here take pictures". Since Rob has a better phone camera, this wasn't strange - but he wasn't interested in our usual selfie, instead he kept insisting I take pictures of the city....uhhhh, ok?! So Lauren did as she was told, taking a few pictures of the skyline. When she turned around, Rob was down on one knee and saw the sparkle of the ring immediately! After a few sweet words from Rob, he asked Lauren to be his wife...of course she said YES!! The second best part of the whole story - when we returned home, our plan was to order takeout and call loved ones....but the housekeeper was still there. So while we enjoyed our romantic "just engaged" dinner at home, Iona our lovely housekeeper was there too!
