Mark was at a party and matched with Tianna on Tinder. She was at a concert celebrating her 22nd birthday. Neither remember how he broke the ice, but they recall him wishing her a happy birthday and making a joke about doing laundry. The joke didn’t dissuade Tianna, who had just moved to Brooklyn a week earlier, from agreeing to go on a date with him. Both arrived late. Mark was tired of dating, but he convinced himself to go. Tianna was nervous, but her roommates pushed her out the door. They both thought about cancelling last minute. When she arrived, Mark made more jokes. Tianna liked how he made her laugh. He liked how she was expressive. He thought she could have been a great silent film actress. They talked about their relatives who loved Prince, and their own favorite albums. She loved Purple Rain. He preferred 1999. They agreed to meet again and ended up on three more dates the following week. They went to art galleries, ate chicken and waffles in Harlem, and watched The Office. She arrived an hour and a half late to their fourth date, less through a genuine fault of her own than through her unfamiliarity with New York’s crumbling subway system. He was able to forgive her, somehow, and held her hand for the first time. He realized, at that moment, that he loved her; and she realized, right after, that she met someone who would be kind and forgiving. She fell for him because he read the newspaper everyday, knew her favorite bands and had great hair. He fell for her because he could talk to her about anything, and, somehow, laughed at over a quarter of his jokes. By the time they will be married, they will have been together for nearly seven years. They are both quite happy they didn't cancel that first date.
