How We Met

Coming soon to Hallmark

We met on Mark's first day of work with the National Park Service at Virgin Islands National Park, November 8, 2021. Beth was there on a temporary work assignment, had gotten a flat tire that first morning of Interpretive training (#islandproblems), and met Mark while on lunch break in the visitor center buying a stuffed turtle and spotted eagle ray to console her for her rough morning. Neither of us was what the other had expected of the new employee/Chief of Interpretation. At all. We got to know each other over the next few weeks. Mark was the best Interpretation trainee she'd ever had. They bonded over editing wayside text and struggling to update the park website. After weeks of having an unknown mutual crush, a few snorkeling adventures, and a day out on a dinghy with Beth and her mom, Beth asked out Mark as soon as it was work-appropriate, just after her detail ended with only a few days left on the island. Mark said, "Yes!" and then suggested they spend the next few days together. Just before Beth left the island, Mark asked if she would be his girlfriend, and thus began two years of long distance dating until Mark got a job at Richmond National Battlefield Park and moved to Virginia.
