How We Met

First comes napkin, then comes marrage.

Are you Dutch?” might be a questionable pick-up line for a Latvian, but somehow Mike managed to use it on Marija during their first encounter. What Marija noticed first about Mike was the familiar, fluffy face of his dog, Chancho, who looked like the big brother of her family’s Shiba Inu. After a brief conversation, Marija headed to trivia at Fullsteam Brewery, while Mike (most likely) set off in his blue truck to locate Latvia on a map. A couple of weeks later, Marija was running late to trivia at Fullsteam and encountered a second, far more successful pick-up line from a more geographically enlightened Mike: "Hey!” she heard from across the street at Parts and Labor. This caught her attention, and Marija responded, “Hey!” before promptly joining her trivia team. But there was something special about that “Hey!” that Marija couldn’t shake. During a break in trivia (a game her team was undoubtedly dominating), she sneaked over to Parts and Labor. Enlisting the support of a friend she spotted at the bar, she enjoyed an emboldening tequila shot. Understanding the power of analog in a digital world, Marija grabbed a napkin and a pen she “borrowed” from the bar, writing down her name and phone number. In a move straight out of a Kate Hudson rom-com, she approached Mike and his table of friends, handed over the napkin without a word, and walked "smoothly" away—despite legends suggesting otherwise, she did not trip on a dog leash on her way out as she effortlessly made her exit. Guess what? He called—and asked if they could go Dutch.
