Yes! Mexico is one of our favorite places to travel. The island is safe to walk around and the people are very friendly. Just use good judgement like you would at home.
After flying into the Cancun airport, you will need to take a shuttle to the ferry at Puerto Juarez. We typically use a company called CARM for transport. We would recommend getting tickets for the ferry directly from them because it is much easier. They are extremely reliable and will get you there safely. The boat ride is about 25 minutes which will be spent taking in scenery of the blue water and listening to live music. Snacks and drinks are available on board.
When you arrive in Cancun, you will be directed to go through customs and show your passport. You can then proceed to baggage claim if you brought luggage, if not, follow signs for the exit. On the way you will pass multiple car rental companies, keep walking! It is common for people to try to rent you a car or offer a cab. Just say no thank you and continue to walk outside to find the company you have prebooked transportation with.
We would recommend staying downtown where restaurants, bars, shopping, and the nicest beach are all accessible by walking. This is also where the wedding will be held. If you do choose to stay closer to Punta Sur, cabs are available for transport for about 10 US dollars.
We would recommend getting pesos before your trip. They can typically be ordered from your bank online, or you can use an ATM on the island. Most places do accept US dollars but you will save by paying in pesos instead. If you will be paying with card, look for one that has no travel fees. *Notify your bank that you will be traveling in case you do use a credit card to avoid any problems*
No - Please do not drink the tap water. You might get sick and miss the wedding. However, the water and ice at all of the restaurants is purified, so no worries! If you order a water it will likely be bottled. But some of the restaurants do have their own filter system. If you are staying at a hotel we would recommend asking the front desk if their water is filtered.
If you are staying downtown, you can walk almost everywhere. If you do want to explore, red taxis are prevalent on the island. There is a cab stand right by the ferry or you can flag one down. Golf carts can also be rented hourly or daily if you want to go on your own adventure.
