The location of the first transatlantic wireless signal, but we love it for the hiking trails and beautiful view of downtown St. John's!
The most easterly point in North America and a great place to explore along the coast and watch for whales and birds!
North America's oldest organized sporting event. There will be boat races and vendors at the lake all day on Aug. 7th, which usually draws a crowd of 50,000 people. Be aware, this is a civic holiday in St. John's and is weather-dependent, listen to the radio in the morning to find out if it will be going ahead or postponed to the next day.
If you like to hike, the East Coast Trail includes more than 300km of trail along the coast. Some of our favourite trails include Father Troy's Trail, Cape Spear Path, La Manche Village Path, and Sugarloaf Path. Remember, all the trails are one way, so prepare to hike both ways if you only have one vehicle. Maps are not available online, email mariaandseth2019@gmail.com for trail maps and recommendations.
If you love birdwatching (we do), we recommend visiting Cape St. Mary's to see the third-largest nesting site and southernmost colony of northern gannets in North America. It's also the southernmost breeding area for thick-billed murres and common murres in the northwest Atlantic Ocean.
Located on Signal Hill, the GeoCentre is a great place to stop in for a visit before or after hiking the Signal Hill Trail. It's a Science Centre with exhibits about geology, the titanic, and the offshore oil and gas industry in Newfoundland.
