FAQ (Preguntas frecuentes)

These are some common questions we've gotten about traveling to Mexico City. Please let us know if you have any other questions. We want everyone to feel safe and excited to travel for a lovely weekend. ❤️
Question

Why Mexico City?

Answer

We are so excited to celebrate with you in one of our favorite cities. We've experienced some of our favorite trips there enjoying the weather, food, and energy and it's the easiest halfway point between our Mexican and American families. We're so happy that we get to blend our Mexican and American cultures for what we hope is a memorable weekend for everyone!

Question

What do you mean by formal attire?

Answer

Gentlemen are invited to wear tailored suits or tuxedos, and ladies are encouraged to opt for floor length gowns or cocktail dresses. We appreciate your participation in creating a celebratory atmosphere on our special day! Be sure to avoid wearing stilletos due to the uneven cobblestone lining our venue.

Question

Do I need to to know Spanish?

Answer

Americans are very common in Polanco, Roma, and Condesa. We recommend using whatever Spanish you know, especially greetings, but service workers will gladly speak English to you. Uber drivers may speak less English but will be able to manage.

Question

How should I get around?

Answer

Ubers are readily available from the airport (Benito Juarez). Cars tend to be smaller in Mexico City so we recommend taking an Uber XL or an Uber XL black for a more comfortable ride. Luckily, Ubers are very affordable compared to US cities. Traffic can be unpredictable, so give yourself extra time when getting to and from places. The majority of wedding activities will be local in Polanco and will be a 10-15 walk or a short Uber ride away. Stay tuned for more info about wedding day transportation. For other transportation needs, we recommend taking Ubers.

Question

Should I bring cash? Where do I get pesos?

Answer

Most restaurants, bars, and stores accept Visa and Mastercard, but some smaller businesses (such as markets and street vendors) may only take cash. American Express is less commonly accepted. If you'd like to bring pesos with you, the easiest way to get dollars exchanged through pesos is through your bank in the US. You usually have to request pesos several days in advance, so give yourself enough time to place the order before you leave. If you prefer exchanging cash once you're in Mexico, look for a Casa de Cambio (currency exchange office) in tourist areas. You can also exchange money at the airport, but the rates may not be as favorable.

Question

Will the altitude affect me?

Answer

Mexico City sits in a valley in the high Mexican central plateau with an elevation of 7,349 feet. You might notice you are more tired than usual after a day or two of arrival. Drink enough water and stay hydrated at all times. You might also experience that alcohol hits you faster here, and it is all because of the high elevation. Luckily, you can find bottles of electrolytes in every OXXO or 7-11 store.

Question

How safe is the water and food?

Answer

A good rule of thumb is to avoid all tap water. Use bottled water to brush your teeth and be mindful of swallowing water while you shower. Be on the cautious side and ask for bottled water at restaurants. Ice is okay - ice used to prepare drinks and cocktails is made with filtered water. Coffee shops and juice stands prepare beverages with filtered water as well. While tempting, we recommend avoiding street food as they may not follow cautious sanitation methods. We hope no one gets sick - but in case you do, Eskapar and Treda are lighter antibiotics targeting stomach bugs. You can buy it over the counter at local pharmacies or order on UberEats.

Question

What should I pack?

Answer

Mexico City has great weather in March, with consistent temperatures of mid to high 70s. It’s the dry time of the year so rain isn’t expected. Evenings can be chilly so pack layers. Pack comfortable shoes since you might do lots of walking as you explore the city. Dress up if visiting high-end restaurants. Locals tend to be dressier when going out.

Question

Should I make reservations in advance?

Answer

Some restaurants and museums should be booked in advance. The Mexico City dining and bar scene is lively and includes some of our favorite restaurants. You should book lunch or dinner reservations well in advance if you have Pujol (https://pujol.com.mx/eng/) or Quintonil (https://quintonil.com/en/home-3/) on your list of places to eat. If traveling to Mexico City with friends or family, it's also worth booking lunch and dinner reservations in advance because it will be harder for sought-after restaurants and bars to accommodate walk-ins of large parties. Buy tickets to the Frida Kahlo Museum or the Luis Barragan House with plenty of time, and plan the itinerary of your trip around the reservations that are harder to get. February to early May and September to December are usually the busiest months to visit Mexico City, so plan around that if you prefer to avoid crowds.

Question

What about crime? Is Mexico City safe?

Answer

Strolling around central neighborhoods like Roma, Polanco, Coyoacán or Condesa is safe. It’s very common to see Americans. In recent years, Mexico City's government has increased security patrols in most areas, and overall, the city is one of the safest parts of the country. As in any major city, be aware of your surroundings and always be mindful of your belongings. Watch out for petty crime and pickpocketing in tourist areas.

Question

Here are some tips for staying safe in Mexico City

Answer

- Use Uber or Lyft instead of Taxis - Be aware of your surroundings and avoid walking alone at night. - Uber at night instead of walking if you are walking far. - Be careful when crossing the street, as drivers can be erratic.

Question

Can I drink alcohol in the streets?

Answer

Don't drink alcohol in the streets. Drinking in the streets of Mexico City is illegal. If you get caught by the police drinking alcohol in the streets, you may face or fine or jail time.

Question

How much should I tip and when?

Answer

While Mexico City has less of a tipping culture than the US, consider a 10-15% tip as the standard based on the full tab at restaurants, bars, and coffee shops or the amount paid for booking experiences and services. Service staff at restaurants and bars will ask if you wish to add a tip before swiping your card.

Question

✦ ✦ ✦ ✦ ✦

Answer

Question

¿Por que CDMX?

Answer

Question

¿Qué significa vestimenta formal?

Answer

Question

¿Me afectará la altura?

Answer

Question

¿Debo de hacer reservaciones con mucho anticipo?

Answer

Question

¿Qué debo empacar?
