Cartagena is packed with history. The walled city is made up of pastel colonial buildings lined with flowers, cobblestone streets, and plenty of restaurants and boutiques (check out some of the incredible Colombian designers across the city).
The fortress was built in 1536 as part of the Spanish Empire's defensive network in Cartagena. The castle was expanded significantly in 1657 and has been invaded by pirates, admirals, and barons over its 400-year-old reign.
A ten minute walk from the old city is the Getsemani area. It's a Wynwood-esque up-and-coming charming neighborhood with plenty of street art, wall murals, music, and dancing!
Originally built in 1893 as the central theatre for boxing tournaments, concerts, and bull fighting. The monument is now a mall with plenty of gastronomy and great shopping.
We are already planning a group island day at Makani Beach Island on Thursday, and we’d love for you to join us! Makani offers a beautiful open-air beach club experience and is an easy way to enjoy the Caribbean together before the wedding. If you’d like to explore more, Cartagena is also the gateway to the stunning Rosario Islands, known for crystal-clear waters and snorkeling. Some islands are closer (about 15 minutes by boat), while others are farther out (around 45 minutes). We personally visited Sabai, which is farther out and more exclusive, but there are plenty of great options depending on your vibe and schedule. You’re welcome to join us at Makani and plan additional island trips if you’d like.
A sunset cruise is one of the most relaxing and beautiful ways to experience Cartagena. Cruises typically depart in the early evening and glide through Cartagena Bay as the sun sets behind the city skyline, often including music, drinks, and incredible views of the walled city and Bocagrande. Options range from lively catamarans to more intimate sailboats, making it easy to choose the vibe you prefer. This is a great standalone activity or the perfect way to kick off an evening out in the city.
A Chiva is a classic Cartagena experience. Chivas are an open-air, brightly colored party bus that tours the city at night with music, dancing, drinks, and nonstop energy. These rides usually loop through popular neighborhoods and scenic spots, making them a fun, low-commitment way to see the city while celebrating with friends. Chivas are social, lively, and perfect for groups looking to kick off a night out or keep the party going. No itinerary is required, just show up ready to dance.
