How We MetHow We Met

It all started with a mellophone.

We met at band camp when Dylan was a freshman and Annie was a sophomore. Fate (and instrument assignments) placed us side by side in basics block. From that first summer of eight-to-five drills and shared sheet music, a friendship was born.

Stomp, Stomp, Clap: TU!Stomp, Stomp, Clap: TU!

Throughout college, we were always finding our way next to each other while at band — friends who could talk for hours about everything and nothing.

Deep down, it’s clear now that we knew there was something more, but the timing was never quite right. Still, we always found our way to each other, whether at Temple football and basketball games (we just so happened to stand next to each other in the stands), parties, birthdays, or on Broad Street after that unforgettable Eagles’ Super Bowl win in 2018. From the Boca Bowl to the Military Bowl, from basketball games to Annie’s graduation party, we were always in each other’s orbit.

After college, life took us in different directions.

We spent time figuring ourselves out, chasing new experiences, and then—like everyone else—navigating the unexpected twists of a pandemic and all of the change in our lives during that time. Our story picked up again with what was supposed to be a casual dinner at Zesty’s, but we both knew it was more than that. Shortly after, Dylan bought Annie’s extra Harry Styles tickets that she was selling for a concert at Madison Square Garden. (Let’s be honest—he didn’t go for Harry, he went for Annie.) Still, the timing wasn’t right, we thought —Annie was headed to Dubai for an AJC mission, and Dylan was supposed to leave for a three-month work trip to Portugal. Neither of us wanted to start something only to spend months apart. But life had other plans. Dylan’s trip was canceled, and when Annie returned from her travels, Dylan was there to pick her up at the airport - flowers in hand- on the day of Temple’s homecoming game. That moment marked the official start of our relationship - a day that countless others had seen coming for almost a decade.

Two Years of AdventuresTwo Years of Adventures

From there, life together has been one adventure after another.

Despite the fact that we both love to cook, and love each other’s cooking, we’ve spent countless nights indulging our inner foodie spirit at some of our favorite places, like Steak48, Morimoto, and dining experiences up and down the East Coast. We’ve escaped to cozy cabins in the Catskills and Shenandoah, traveled to Miami on our first flight together, and visited cities near and far: - Colorado, where we saw Mt. Joy at Red Rocks, spent time with Annie’s family in Littleton, and saw the incredible views from the top of Mt. Evans on Al’s recommendation. - NYC again and again for shows, celebrations, and sometimes just a night away when Annie is already in the city for work. - Baltimore, where Dylan got to see his favorite leather jacket-ed comedian, Taylor Tomlinson. - Boston, where we saw Noah Kahan with Mt. Joy at Fenway Park and caught up with Dylan’s college roommate, Iain. - Seattle, where we celebrated Becca and Zach’s nuptials and had the best salmon of our lives. - London and Scotland, where we visited Dylan’s family—The Maynards in London and his brother Jack in Scotland. And, of course, our love for concerts has taken us all over. From the Wells Fargo Center to Fenway Park, Red Rocks to Union Transfer, The Mann Center to The Upside, and so many more, our shared soundtrack just keeps growing. We’ve also learned each other’s traditions and built some of our own, celebrating Christmas and Easter between Lancaster and Conshohocken with the Harrisons, Barnharts, and Schatzs, and Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, and Passover with the Malmuds. Summers have been filled with beach weekends in Point Pleasant at the Malmud house, so often surrounded by our closest friends.

The ProposalThe Proposal

A few days before our engagement, we had received a message from Dr. Brunner, director of the Temple University Diamond Marching Band, asking us to scout a location on campus for an upcoming event.

He claimed he’d be running late because he was in Florida for his son’s bowl game. Annie saw through the ask, but played along. The day itself started with a visit to Christmas Village on the Winter Solstice, which happened to be one of the coldest days of the year. Annie knew something was up, so she sacrificed warmth for fashion and wore the coat she bought on their trip to Scotland. She may have had to kneel inside of one of the shops in front of a space heater to warm her hands at one point, but she’s no quitter! After braving the cold at Christmas Village, we made our way to Temple. Dylan said we had to meet Dr. Brunner in his office - Annie said that made no sense, he said he wasn’t on campus yet! But Dylan insisted. He walked Annie to Founders Garden, planted his feet in the center, and right there—with the bust of Russell Conwell as our witness—he got down on one knee. Of course, Annie said yes. It may have been a long time coming, but on that day and every day since, we have found ourselves exactly where we were meant to be all this time: together. And so, our next adventure begins. We can’t wait to have you with us as we celebrate our next chapter as The Harrisons!
