The dating app, Okay Cupid, is where the sparks began. Miss Mal-Mal messaged Punxsutawney Phil in March 2014 after seeing, pictures of his "Rock Hudson good looks", his great taste in music, a retail background that Mallory could relate to, that he grew up on the East Coast, and loved bagels. Phil took about 2 months to message Mallory back because he had been dating someone else, but had kicked himself for not replying back. So he just took a chance and responded, which she surprisingly messaged back right away, and the conversation took up as if no time passed by. This made Phil very suspicious because it seemed too good to be true. Later that week on May 21st, they had their first date at Trick Dog in the Mission District of San Francisco. They both showed up wearing leather jackets and made great conversation over artisanal cocktails. After a little over a month of dating they became exclusive and Phil sent Mallory flowers to her work with a message saying "Hope your day is going well, girlfriend. I can't wait to see you tonight."
