Burlington is a quintessential New England city that is absolutely worth the 45 minute drive from Basin Harbor if you have a morning or afternoon to fill. Amazing food, beer and live music make it a great summer destination. Be sure to checkout the bike trail along the lake with a maple creemee in hand or American Flatbread on St. Paul Street. If you've already been to Burlington and are still itching to leave the lake, Middlebury is a beautiful college town a 20-minute drive east of Basin Harbor. There are plenty of local shops, restaurants and vineyards to check out.
Enjoy a walk with some sheep at the beautiful Shelburne Museum & Farms property, a former Vanderbilt mansion turned agricultural non-profit and colonial museum.
Basin Harbor is located just outside of Vergennes, a sleepy little mill town on Lake Champlain. There isn't much to see in town besides Vergennes Falls Park which offers a nice view of the waterfalls that used to power the mills. However anything else you may need for the weekend can be purchased here (coffee shops, liquor store, pharmacy, etc.).
In addition to the network of trails on Basin Harbor's property, there are several close state parks and recreational areas for hiking in the area: -Button Bay State Park -Bristol Cliffs Wilderness -Chipman Hill (Middlebury) -Green Mountain National Forrest -Middlebury Recreation Park
