The oldest extant brick home in North America, this former Allen family dwelling became a redoubt of Nathaniel Bacon's Rebellion in 1676. Its Jacobean architecture is exceedingly rare in the western hemisphere.
A short, nicely maintained trail to historical markers of this fort overlooking the James River. The James River Ghost Fleet is visible through gaps in the foliage. An unmarked path down the bluff leads to the beach but that's for you to find, we're not telling.
There are many ways to see Williamsburg, but it's best explored on foot. Entry into the colonial village is free but you'll need a ticket to enter the homes, offices and workshops and interact with the characters.
This is the boarding location when going from Smithfield to Williamsburg. The ferry is free and departs roughly every 30 minutes, 24/7. Look off the starboard (right) side as you pass the point to see Surry Nuclear Power Plant's containment domes - 50 years of emissions-free power and going strong!
You can start anywhere on the boardwalk but this is roughly the center. To the south is the resort area and its throngs, to the north are the more laid back townie areas and apartments. Good restaurants abound but Repeal, Tautog's and Pacifica are highlights. There is paid street parking (use the kiosks or website) or paid lot parking, but there is very little free parking; be careful not to get towed, the lots in particular are merciless.
