Things To Do

Welcome to sunny Smithfield! We're so glad to have you here and hope you have a chance to enjoy the area. This 273 year old town has a charming Main Street, replete with butcher, baker and brewer. Downtown also hosts a farmer's market and the old Courthouse/History Museum. A veritable trove of eateries, galleries, antiqueries, a winery and shopping galore are within a few blocks. Those seeking more history nearby will enjoy Bacon's Castle or Fort Huger, about 30 minutes away. For the ambitious, the Historic colony of Williamsburg is an hour away but offers an immersive (if whitewashed) experience of colonial life. As a side-quest, take the Jamestown-Scotland ferry to enjoy unique views of the James River and Surry Nuclear Plant. If you seek sun and sand, Virginia Beach has it in abundance. The boardwalk stretches for miles and you're close to many fine restaurants.

Bacon's Castle

465 Bacons Castle Trail, Surry, VA 23883

The oldest extant brick home in North America, this former Allen family dwelling became a redoubt of Nathaniel Bacon's Rebellion in 1676. Its Jacobean architecture is exceedingly rare in the western hemisphere.

Fort Huger

15080 Talcott Terrace, Smithfield, VA 23430

A short, nicely maintained trail to historical markers of this fort overlooking the James River. The James River Ghost Fleet is visible through gaps in the foliage. An unmarked path down the bluff leads to the beach but that's for you to find, we're not telling.

Colonial Williamsburg

101 Visitor Center Drive, Williamsburg, VA 23185

There are many ways to see Williamsburg, but it's best explored on foot. Entry into the colonial village is free but you'll need a ticket to enter the homes, offices and workshops and interact with the characters.

Jamestown-Scotland Ferry (Scotland Landing)

16289 Rolfe Highway, Surry, VA 23883

This is the boarding location when going from Smithfield to Williamsburg. The ferry is free and departs roughly every 30 minutes, 24/7. Look off the starboard (right) side as you pass the point to see Surry Nuclear Power Plant's containment domes - 50 years of emissions-free power and going strong!

Jamestown-Scotland Ferry (Jamestown Landing)

2292 Jamestown Rd, Jamestown, VA 23185

Virginia Beach Boardwalk

2100 Atlantic Ave, Virginia Beach, VA 23451

You can start anywhere on the boardwalk but this is roughly the center. To the south is the resort area and its throngs, to the north are the more laid back townie areas and apartments. Good restaurants abound but Repeal, Tautog's and Pacifica are highlights. There is paid street parking (use the kiosks or website) or paid lot parking, but there is very little free parking; be careful not to get towed, the lots in particular are merciless.
