Avalanche Ranch is located between Carbondale and Redstone and offers natural hotspring pools with amazing views of the Crystal River valley. Paid access is available to the public by reservation only. This is one of the most popular spots in the valley so check availability and make reservations as far in advance and possible. Reservations are required for paying access guests not lodging at the Ranch. Limited paid public access by reservation.
This hidden gem has become a little more popular over the years but is still such a fun "side of the road" pitstop. About halfway between Carbondale and Redstone, a series of cars pulled off to the side of the highway will let you know you're there. The Penny Hotsprings are natural hot springs on the banks of the Crystal River. Access is completely free, BYOB, and, as long as you're willing to descend the rocky ledge to get there, such a fun way to unwind. Don't worry we've done it many times and we're fine.
For guests arriving early or staying late, Carbondale has a local rodeo that runs every Thursday night during the summer. Gates open at 5:30pm and tickets are $10 each. Pack a cooler and picnic or enjoy on site food vendors. Yeehaw!
If you’re looking for a challenging and breathtaking (literally) day hike, the Hanging Lake Trail is a must. The 3 mile up and back hike is just outside of Glenwood Springs and available with reservation and permit, which can be purchased on the website for $12. Don't be fooled by the fact that it's only 3 miles, the trail is steep and difficult but 100% worth it when you get to the top.
The Silver Queen Gondola ride up Aspen Mountain is a must-do if you plan to spend an afternoon in Aspen. The ride up offers spectacular views of 14,000 mountain peaks and the valley below. You can grab lunch at The Sundeck, stay on the mountain for a quick hike, or head back down for some shopping downtown!
