Guatemala City’s La Aurora International Airport is approximately one hour from Antigua. Those flying from the NYC area, direct flights included United at Newark Airport and Jet Blue out of JFK. Connecting flights are abundant and can be less expensive.
There are several options including Uber, prearranged shuttle services (links will be provided below shortly), prearranged hotel shuttles or rent a car. It is not recommended to take a taxi. Parking is extremely limited in Antigua and all parking requires payment.
We checked out a bunch of hotels and listed them in the Travel section. While Antigua is considered safe, we recommend staying closer to La Merced as to not worry about finding transportation after the reception. The beautiful hotels located on the outskirts of the main town may have shuttle services available. There are several home rentals available on VRBO and AirBnB. Prior to paying deposits, clarify all house rules with the owner and verify the specific address. There are some major location discrepancies with several of the listings.
Although Antigua is gorgeous, it is still a Central American country. We recommend bringing an antibiotic in case of parasite infection. Mafer’s mother always recommends travels take PinWorm medication 24 hours prior to traveling as a preventative measure. Once in Guatemala, drink BOTTLED water, avoid street food and stick to reputable restaurants.

While it is not absolutely necessary to have local currency on hand, it is helpful if you want to barter at with the local markets, tip guides or take a tuk-tuk (small taxi).
If you decide to take a Tuk-Tuk to get around town, negotiate the price prior to getting into the car. If they do not want to negotiate in advance, it’s advisable to walk away and find another driver. They take advantage of tourists.
Antigua is a beautiful tourist town but the roads are over 250 years old. The roads are constructed of rocks and are very uneven. It is highly recommended to leave heels at home. While touring, sneakers are perfect. For the rehearsal dinner, wedding and reception, low block heels or flats are advisable. The roads and reception venue are not walkable in heels.
