Having gone to college at nearby Georgetown University, we still love to return to Georgetown to walk through M Street shops and restaurants as well as head down to the Potomac waterfront. Check out the following: Off M Street: - Kafe Leopold in Cady's Alley for amazing croissants - El Centro for excellent Mexican food - Clyde's for crab cakes - Baked and Wired for dessert/cupcakes (Madeline loves the carrot cake!) - Thomas Sweet's ("T-Sweets") for incredible ice-cream At the waterfront: - Bangkok Joe's for casual Asian cuisine - Farmers, Fishers, and Bakers for casual American cuisine - Nick's/Tony and Joe's for drinks with a waterfront view
Start at the Lincoln Memorial, skirt along the Tidal Basin to view the Jefferson Memorial, walk through the World War II memorial, and then rest on the grass at the Washington Monument or continue on to view the other memorials (Korean War, Vietnam War, MLK Memorial). Keep walking all the way down the Mall and you will hit the US Capitol. Madeline's Favorite: the hidden FDR Memorial (tucked away along the Tidal Basin, past the MLK Memorial). Jon's Favorite: the view from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial.
Visit the (free!) Smithsonian National Museums located on the National Mall: - Museum of Natural History - Museum of American History - Museum of African American History and Culture - National Air and Space Museum - Museum of the American Indian - National Gallery of Art Madeline's Favorite: American History Jon's Favorite: Air and Space Museum (but go see the one in Dulles too).
