Michael and I met in 2010 at St. Helens High, room A1 to be exact. I was a freshman, he a senior. The second we met, we had an undeniable attraction towards each other and knew we’d play a significant part in each other’s lives. Well, we both grew up and moved away from our small home town. After nearly 10 years of no contact, fate had reconnected us. He just so happened to respond to my plea for a husband (I often joked that he at least knew what he was getting himself into). After meeting up for the first time in so many years, it was like no time had passed. We were both quickly comfortable with each other. In no time we were swapping “I love yous” and becoming each others’ best friends. For so long I felt like I was missing something. I am so grateful to have found my missing piece again.
On Christmas Eve, it is tradition that the Newcomb family all get together for dinner, gift exchange, and celebration. This was Michael’s first year attending the Newcomb family Christmas. While Madi was helping in the kitchen, Michael snuck away outside to talk with Madi’s father and sister. He showed them the ring and asked if he could marry her. Her father gave his approval and maybe even shed a tear. Later that night, after all the gifts had been opened, Michael stood to thank Madi’s family for accepting him and explained he had one last gift to give. He faced Madi, got on one knee and asked her to be his wife. She didn’t hesitate. She took the ring from its cozy box and placed it on her finger, where it stays to this day. The Newcomb family shared congratulatory hugs and tears. Then the newly engaged couple were quickly off to share the news with Michael’s family. Chritsmas is a busy time of year for blended families..
Michael and I currently reside in a cozy home in SE Portland. I am a medical assistant for OHSU and Michael is a technician for ADT Security. We share our home with our dogs, Maple (Boston Terrier) and Flynn (Bull Terrier) and our two guinea pigs, Potato and Peppa. Every other weekend, we get to spend time with Michael's 6 year old daughter, Octavia. She loves playing video and board games, making crafts, playing outside, and snuggling her daddy and Maple. On weekends we are alone, Michael and I enjoy seeing friends and family, going out of town for a mini vacation, or relaxing with each other at home. It's a mundane life, but it's ours and it's perfect.
